Immerse yourself in the dramatic interpretations of "Firebird: Flames and Fury," a concert that takes you on a journey into conflict through a musical experience. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet tells Shakespeare’s tragedy through symphonic poetry. Then, Jean Sibelius' Karelia Suite brings to life the story of Karelia’s revolt against oppression. Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite is the mythical tale created from Russian folklore about a brave prince and a clever Firebird working together to defeat tyranny and bring freedom to the oppressed. Join us for a night of meaningful and courageous musical conversations.
Grant Cooper, an internationally-acclaimed conductor, leads the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra in its performance of the popular “Sounds of Cinema” concert this season. From Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musicals to John Williams’ blockbuster hits, everyone in the family is sure to connect with these iconic tunes. Songs from Jurassic Park, Phantom of the Opera, and A Little Night Music will have you tapping your toes and humming along. In a format unique to Northern Colorado, this narrated concert will share trivia about the composers, films, and specific scenes from which the songs are featured. For some extra fun, join the orchestra in dressing up as characters from your favorite films!
The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra joins forces with the University of Northern Colorado combined chorus to embark on an adventure across Europe. Experience wit, tragedy, and joy from Massenet’s Overture for the Greek tragedy Phèdre to Jacques Ibert’s honeymoon-inspired Ports of Call and Ravel’s only unaccompanied choral piece, Trois Chansons, a cleverly original collection of three fairy tale-like songs. The concert closes with Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, which is described as “borderline sacrilegious” for its mischievous setting of the Catholic Mass texts.
Life for us all is filled with moments of great joy, sadness, and every emotion in between. “A Human Experience” explores this vast spectrum through Mozart’s cleverly comedic Cosí fan Tutte Overture, Anna Clyne’s jovial “Masquerade,” and Rachmaninoff’s nostalgic Symphonic Dances. Concluding the season, the GPO is honored to premiere Composer-in-Residence Dylan Fixmer’s Concerto for Electric Cello - a three movement work for solo electric cello and symphony orchestra commissioned for GPO Principal cellist Becky Kutz Osterberg. This new work is based on Becky's experiences navigating lifelong depression and depicts sets of characteristics that embody her emotional journey. Drawing from Becky's first-hand experiences and scientific research on mental illness and trauma psychology, this piece is dedicated to those facing these challenges, shedding light on the often silent agony of navigating mental health issues.
