A note on string seating requirements:

An orchestral ensemble functions similarly to a sports team, in that the focus of the preparations and performances is on the entire ensemble, and not just individual players.  Occasionally, the various instrumental sections are divided into two or more parts, as is frequently the case with the violins, but the other sections can be divided from time to time as well. These part divisions are not hierarchical, as all parts of the score are critical to the combined sound of the orchestra.

Students will be seated according to their abilities, and to how they will be best suited to support the entire ensemble.  Seating assignments are never punitive, and are not meant to discourage individual players; instead, we are actively trying to fit the players to a role in the ensemble where they can be the most successful individually and for the greatest benefit to the whole group.  As such, it is possible and common for more experienced players to be distributed within their section to create the best and most balanced sound possible.

Seating assignments can be changed at the discretion of the music director as the needs of the ensemble change.
