About the Concert:

The GPO sets its sails for summer time with a sea-themed season finale. 45-years after its release, the haunting minor second written for Jaws continues to send shivers down a listeners’ spine. Land-locked or not, selections from John Williams’ Jaws will make you happy you’re comfortable in a seat in Monfort Concert Hall and not on a boat. After evading a 25-foot Great White Shark, the GPO sets sail in its inaugural performance of James Horner’s Titanic Suite, highlighting your favorite musical selections from one of the highest-grossing films of all time. The season wraps by recognizing Dr. Galen Darrough’s 30 years of service to the arts and culture of our community as he conducts more than 160 singers through Mozart’s Te Deum. Though our season is coming to an end, and we tug at your heartstrings with Jaws and The Titanic, the GPO and UNC Combined Chorus will grant you peace through Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem.

What’s Interesting About this Concert:

  • Jaws is 45 years old (released in 1975)
  • It’s the anniversary of James Horner’s death (2015)
  • We’ll recognize Galen Darrough’s 30 years of service to UNC and collaborations with the GPO
  • GPO Cellist Anne Brennand plays on the cello that belonged to her grandfather, who was originally supposed to perform on the Titanic before falling ill and passing the gig to Roger Bricoux
